In der Umweltstatistik eignet sich als statistische Einheit häufig am besten eine bestimmte Land- oder Wasserfläche, deren Größe sich je nach Art der Variable ändern kann. Für Umweltmanagementzwecke sollte als Ausgangsgebiet für die Untersuchung eine kleine Einheit gewählt werden (NUTS III oder LOC).
